Pre-Easter   2002  ][ Back ]

Just before Easter in all parishes in Poland, there is a great processional for the Stations of the Cross, that uniquely Catholic commeoration of the way of Jesus on the way to the crucifixion. There are fourteen stations, beginning with the trial of Jesus when is condemned to death and ending with the resurrection on Easter Sunday.

A great procession is organized in all parishes and placards with crosses for each of the fourteen stations is afixed along the way. The procession moves from station to station, praying and listening to the priest give basically a sermon — a meditation on each station and its significance for Catholics today.

In Lipnica, the procession is organized such that it always ends at the church, and so one year it begins in lower Lipnica and works its way up the village, while the next year it's in upper Lipnica and winds its way down through the village.

These three images were taken 2003 when Easter fell early enough for there to be a light snowfall during the Stations of the Cross processional.
